Ocean Nail Art | Earth Day Challenge Day 1

Ocean Nail Art

Hello there everyone! Hope you all had a nice weekend and are having a nice start to your week. Today is Earth Day and for me the start of Earth Week. As you may or may not know, this month on here I've been hosting a Earth Day Blogging Series. We've had amazing guests from all over talking about different things related to the Earth from recycling, water supply, ditching straws and there is more to come which I am super excited about. Now in addition to all of that, this week I'll be doing the 5 Day Nail Art challenge I shared HERE.

The theme for day one is Water, so I have created a mani in honor of the Ocean, or more specifically, sea levels. The sea level is changing due to Climate change and it something everyone should be talking about. According to NOAA the sea level is rising and at a rather speedy rate. They attribute this to Earths warming and the melting of the icebergs which then release more water into the ocean. Plus warmer water expands so the warmer the water is the more it will expand, thus pushing the water further in on coast lines.

I personally find anything about the ocean very interesting, so rather than me misinterpret something and I don't lead you in any wrong ways.... I have sourced out some very informational pages if you are interested in learning more about the sea levels rising.

NOAA has some great very straight forward that is also a bit alarming. The rate at which the ocean is rising is really quite intense when you look at what NOAA has said.

The next site with great information is called Sea Level Org and they have some really great in depth info. An explanation of how it's changing, and exactly whats causing it, which is actually a group of different things. Plus there are some really great infographics as well. One part I fond really interesting was the Gulf Stream bit. In 2015 I was actually in a Marine Biology class and we learned a bit about how the gulf stream may possibly slowing down, and this site elaborated a bit more on it, but also clarified they are not certain on it being a cause. Basically the theory of the Gulf Stream slowing down is a two part thing. One being if the Gulf Stream is slowing it's no longer pulling as much water away from the coat lines therefore the water levels will be higher. Then the other part of it is that with the iceberg melting more fresh water is being put into the ocean whereas the gulf stream pulls warm salty water and that being said its not pulling any of the newly added water into the Gulf Stream. This is all still being looked into according to numerous sources however according to Sea Level Org scientists are saying that the slowing of the Gulf Stream is affecting the tide cycles.

Mentioning of tides, maybe you are wondering why the sea level rising is an important or scary thing. To me it's obvious now more than it ever has been and I'm starting to think more people are seeing it. But the sea level is rising and that is cutting into the shorelines. Some of those shore lines consist of houses and town's yet they are loosing more and more land as this happens. Plus this makes tropical storms more intense, the storm surges will come in further and put more people as risk than they would have 20 years ago. That kinda of takes me into the theme of another day later this week soooo....  I'll try to save that bit, but that just goes to show it does affect many things, so more on the warming of the ocean later this week. :)

I think to wrap this all up though it's important to pay attention to the various things that are happening in the ocean, what it going on with our climate and how it is changing. Everything we do has a chain reaction affect in some way or another, and now is the time to make some changes to see if they can help in the long term. I'm really excited about getting to talk about more Earth related issues later this week during this nail challenge and I hope you join in. Remember you are more than welcome to join in on the challenge, and or just help start the conversation about the Earth with the hashtag #EarthdayNailChallenge.

Also wanted to share a lil something fun and extra, last week a large handful of musicians got together to create a song called Earth, here is a link to a CLEAN version. I think its really kinda neat and there is a whole site dedicated to it and what the proceeds of the songs purchases and streams will be going to be. You can check out that site HERE. The video for the song is neat, but most certainly has some unneeded parts so just ya know, be a little mindful as to wear you watch it, the message is still a great one. Plus the fact they say we have 12 years until the damage is no long reversible is alarming so go give it a read.

Wow, ok so that was a lot of info. Hopefully it wasn't too scary, but in all honesty it is scary to think about. I know we all think nothing we do will really help, but all the little things do add up so a little something is better than nothing at all in my opinion.

Now that I feel like we've had a super heavy deep topic I should probably fill you in on these nails huh? Well I absolutely love them!! They are fun and I've never done ocean-y nails quite like this. For this look I started with a white base because I wanted to use jelly polishes on top. For my white I used Nails Inc White Out, love it! Then after that dried I grabbed 3 different new polishes from Painted Phalanges. For the sandy parts of my nails I used 2 coats of Toes in the Sand. Then for the ocean and creating a mixture of blues like you would see in the actual ocean I used Come Away With me, and Is the Tide Gonna Reach My Chair. I just built it until I was content, and played around with the placement. Plus to do this I thought about "our" beach and the color variation depending on how rough it is on some days, and or where the sand bar may be.

Where the water and the land merges I put on some squiggly white acrylic paint. Then on top of the rest of the water I took a light blue acrylic paint and add some ripple like lines to show what would be the waves forming before hitting the shore. Then on top I added more of  Toes in the Sand  and Is the Tide Gonna Reach My Chair. Then where the squiggly white acrylic paint was I also used some of the blues to blend it all together.

Then of course I topped it all off with a top coat and a shiny one at that and it was good to go. One of my new favorite beach manis for sure. I actually really do not want to take them off and I am SO happy they turned out. Well guys I think thats it for today! I hope you have enjoyed this very different and lengthy post. I have had an absolute joy of a time creating it and talking about something I really care and worry about. You all know I'm a big ocean lover so I'm sure we will be talking about it again soon this week! :) Anywhoooo, talk to you soon!
