Shark Week Nail Art

Shark Nail Art

Hello and welcome back! I am super excited about todays post because I have so much to share photo wise, and other wise. As most already know, next week is shark week so everyone will be seeing shark all the things on the Internet so I thought eh why not also be apart of that myself! So that being said todays post is all about sharks, shark teeth to be exact because well why not!

All of todays manis are actually inspired by real shark teeth I found on the beach! Funny story, when we first moved to this area I couldn't find any shark teeth, it literally took be a year before I found one. Since then though I have quite a few. Often times tho I think, why!? But its kind of like fossil hunting, and I also want to find enough to create the shape of Florida on a canvas for some wall art.

Anywhoooo this first mani was inspired by a sand tiger shark tooth. These I would say are common around here, as I find quite a few of them. This one is one of the largest ones I have found in a while so it was kind of exciting when I found it later.

Here is a look at it and a sketch I did of it as well just for something fun. :)  Do you know why shark teeth are often black when you find them on the beach? I mean I think we all expect them to be white, but thats not often the case. Most often when people find them they are black because they have absorbed different minerals in the water making them black, grey, and even brown! I think that is cool! I'll be honest, I never really cared for science classes by my favorite one was Marine Biology probably due to my love of the ocean.

For this look I used China Glaze I'll Sand by You as my base color. The rest is acrylic paint as you guessed! On the polish I added some white, brown, lavender, and pink to give the crushed shell look. Often I find teeth where the water kisses the shore and there are all the "shelly bits". For some reason I spot them best when they glisten in the water, however my mom always finds them up in the dry areas not too far from the dunes, ya know where most set up chairs! Now back to painting talk, I started with a grey tooth and then added the rest of the detail in black.

I wasn't sure what to do beyond the tooth but them I kept thinking old maps, and such so I did a compass and a path that the shark took! If you live near a coastal area a fun site to frequent is Ocearch because its literally a map that shows you wear some sharks are that have been tagged. There are certain ones that we see that frequent this area and come back around the same time of year each year. Its kinda really cool! So if you are in a coastal area or vacationing in one you should check it out!

Next up we have a mani inspired by a Hammer Head Shark tooth! Isn't it interesting how all sharks have different teeth?! Hammer Heads teeth are much more slanted as you can see below!

I actually saw a photo of a baby hammer head that was at one of our local beaches the other day. They literally look like what you would expect!

So I feel like now would be the time for a cool shark story but really I don't have any, well besides the one where we didn't see the shark! Ha! So it was Spring May 2015 I'm thinking and it was one of those days that seniors were out of school and I was one of those at the time, so of course we used that day to head to the beach. My mom and I were walking in out normal direction and we noticed a crowd forming in the opposite direction back towards the beach entrance and my mom was like "lets go see whats going on" and I'm just like "nah, lets not." (Why? I have no clue) So we keep on going and keep on wondering, and by the time we got home I was then wondering too. Quickly after showering I get on instagram and check the geo tag for the beach and lone behold.... it was a shark that had washed up and people were helping it get back into the water. Thrilling story right?! Not, we totally missed it just cause.

This tooth was done in the same way the last one was, acrylic paint! The polishes were different though! The blue is my Moonflower Polish and its called Sparkling Water. The black is an oldie but a goodie, its Serendipity Nail Polish Building My Empire, the white is Nails Inc White Out, and the sparkle is Salon Perfect National Holi-Yay!

Plus who knows maybe you learned something! :) Now that I'm in shark more, I am really wishing the new movie Megalodon was out. It looks kinda neat, exaggerated, oh yes, but kind fun too right? Could you imagine finding a megalodon tooth? I've seen some and WOW! Massive! Ok I best head out, hope you enjoyed this post, let me know what you thought of this post and share any fun shark facts below!

  1. Great manis! I have a very large shark tooth, like megalodon size, that a collector friend gave to me. I really should do a shark week mani too.
