The Pattern Challenge Summer Edition Recap | Hosted by Mélanie Johnsson

Hello! Welcome back, ahh I am SUPER excited about this post, because its basically been a month in the making. Last month, so in June, I participated in a really fun Patterning challenge. I've been wanting to get better at patterning + just create something daily, so when I saw this challenge by Mélanie Johnsson and the prompts felt good I just HAD to join, and I am so glad I did! First off, thank you so so much Mélanie for hosting, it was so so fun. I loved seeing everyones designs in the # plus it was fun to find new artist to follow in the process of it all too! I will try and share some on stories this weekend. 🙂 For now though I wanted this post to serve as a lil recap of the challenge and share what I created for each prompt in case you didn't follow along on Instagram plus why not let it live on forever on the blog too.😃

So the month was broken into increments of 2 days at a time, which was SO nice! It gave me either a chance to "be ahead" or allowed me to take a lil extra time if I needed without feeling like I was getting behind, which I feel like is why/how I was actually able to finish this challenge. ☺️ So VERY happy about that! The first prompt was sunshine! And I created a whole sun oriented pattern. From the sunshines to the protection of sunglasses and SPF!

Day 3 + 4 was Spark which I wasn't sure about but it ended up pretty fun! I did 2 versions!

Day 4 + 5 was Ocean and on this day, I was actually feeling overwhelmed with TOO many options so I went to this easy pattern that I just don't love, however I like it still because the idea came to me while watching Outer Banks for the 3rd time!

Day 6 + 7 was hard in the fact of I couldn't pick ONE color palette! Ha! I did end up doing one full on colored version and then MANY monochromatic versions, which I love having on hand actually!

Day 8 + 9, ice cream, ice cream, we all want ice cream! This was a fun one because I asked people on my IG stories what colors they should be and that's how I decided on the colors of the ice cream scoops!

Days 10 & 11, the prompt was underwater, and even though this was a prompt I was SO looking forward too, I was totally intimidated and felt like their were too many options, so I pushed doing to the second day, which left me with less time so I ended up with this fun lil line art shell pattern! I like it actually and I'm happy I am practicing shells because I LOVE shells, but feel like I can't draw them! Ha!

Day 12 + 13 had a prompt of flow and of course I was thinking, OCEAN! So I wanted to figure out how to make it wave related, and stripes? Yet stripes are something I have never done before, so that was a bit daunting but I figured it out and I am so happy I tackled that task and now I know how to do it! WOOO! Also as I am writing things I am realizing I kind of make patterning sound hard. Which I feel like it is, but also its not. I think when I started designing I had it in my head that patterning would be so easy, and like I could make anything a pattern. While some of that is true, its also not? There is a lot more to making a pattern that I originally thought, so there is a learning curve I guess you could say, plus a lot of planning involved. However once you get in the groove its SO fun, and satisfying!

Day 14 & 15, Cocktails!! This is easily my second favorite outcome of this months patterns ( the first one is yet to come 😉). I just LOVE how this came out, and the mix of citrus, refreshing drinks plus palms! I throughly enjoyed making this one and I still love it right now,  a few weeks removed from making it!

Day 16 and 17 was sunglasses! I couldn't help but think of this song while making this pattern. Oh and I was watching a really good movie called Her Pen Pal while making this pattern so I feel like all around I like this ones outcome because of all of the things that come to mind with it. Plus its just a happy pattern I think!

Day 18 and 19, Sweets! The award for my least fave goes to this one! The concept of fruit shaped cookies was a fun one, but I really don't love this pattern. Like at all right now looking at this. I feel like its a good concept though and could be expanded upon.

Day 20 and 21 DOGS. The one prompt I was fearing the most, but I was determined to not let it get the best of me. I spent HOURS trying to figure out how to illustrate a dog in a style that felt like me. My biggest thing I think that was causing issues, was the fact I wanted to do a Cavalier King Charles. I've always wanted to be able to draw a Cavalier, but I've failed so many times. Granted maybe those attempts weren't bad, but that's the breed of our dog so I am probably overly hard on myself about it. Anywhooo, eventually I got to the point where I didn't hate it and ended up with 2 patterns!

Day 22 and 23 Island! Such a fun prompt with oh so many possibilities. I went with a island hopping vid. You see a boat sailing around and peeks at what may be on the island. like a Brown Pelican, a flamingo lighthouse, and a beach!

Day 24 and 25 are my fave! The prompt was JOY, and my mom had just been using a Florida inspired mug and just looking at it made me happy. So I thought it would be fun to create lil doodles of things that say Florida that make me smile and think of the beach, so that's what I did! I went with a color blocking method here too which is different but I love it!

Day 26 and 27 is cool! SO many directions I could have gone with this one, but I went with Star fish!
I had recently been looking up names of star fish and their are SO many neat star fish out their so I decided to practice illustrating them! I really like how this one came out!

Day 28 + 29, Renewal! Ha, so this one really had me stumped for a bit. But then the song line "gonna relax and renew" kept playing in my head. Which is from High School Musical 2 when Sharpay and Ryan do Fabulous by the pool while they are all in chaise lounges chairs along the pool. Hence the out come of the pattern! 😂 A bit of a stretch, yeah, but now I just laugh when I see it!

The last Day, Sunset! What a symbolic way to round off the challenge. I did a very different sort of style for me but also I kind go love it! I feel like this would be really neat on various items. Like just one of the areas on a hat or shirt, so neat and summery! It was a hard one to figure out but once I got the idea going I loved how it came out!

Wow, so that wraps up the recap of the Pattern Challenge! I love love LOVE that I finished it all, and pushed myself to try new things, and get creative. It was so fun and I am honestly sad its over! It was so motivating plus I can't believe how many things I actually accomplished in one month in addition to all of the normal things I do. Honestly so surprising and motivating! Hope you all enjoyed coming along on this journey with me too! Let me know what your fave one was, or what you would like to see some of these on. I actually have started to list some of them on my Society 6 shop!
